2009-H1N1 Virus Awareness

H1N1 Flu Self-Report

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, please fill out our illness self-report form. A Residential Education staff member will then contact you to offer assistance.

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

Symptoms

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting

In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash

If You Get Sick

Call Student Health (801-581-6431) BEFORE going to the clinic or call your physician BEFORE you go.

Notify Housing & Residential Education by filling out the H1N1 flu self-report form. We can assist you in making a plan to go home if you live nearby or to isolate you in a living area to limit the spread of the virus. We will also help to make a plan for meals.

Please limit your contact with others if you do not feel well and especially if you have been diagnosed.

Housing & Residential Education (HRE)

HRE custodial services staff have taken additional precautions with cleaning and disinfecting residence halls, the Heritage Center, and Computer Labs located in the residence halls.
