Apply for Housing

Housing U - Online application system

What is Housing U?

Housing U is an online system that allows single, undergraduate students that have been admitted to the University of Utah to complete an online housing application, search for and reserve a room, make payments, match up with a roommate, and sign-up for optional services.

Housing applications for the 2008–09 academic year will be available online February 1, 2008. New students (Freshmen and transfer students) will be given reservation times to choose rooms based on their housing application date. The earlier your reservation time, the more choices you have in room style. Room reservation for new students begins May 12, 2008.

Housing Application Checklist

To assist you when applying for housing, we have created a housing application checklist (PDF). Please print it off to help you through the application process.

How do I access Housing U?

Housing U is accessed through the Campus Information System (CIS) page.

  • Log into your CIS portal page using your uNID (University Network ID) and password (first-time login is your six-digit date of birth). Replace the first zero of your student ID number with a lowercase “u” to create your uNID. Your student ID number and password are printed on your U of U acceptance letter.
  • After you log in to CIS, scroll down to the box titled “Student Housing.” Click on “Housing U - Apply for Housing & Manage Your Account” to enter Housing U.

Housing Application Timeline and Floor Designations

Apply for housing early. Room options will be limited for housing applications completed after May 12, 2008. During the 2007–08 academic year, housing was full by the end of July and HRE began a waiting list. We were able to place most of the students on the waiting list within the first two weeks of the semester in a limited number of rooms made available by students who cancelled before the cancellation deadline. To avoid disappointment because a room or the style of room you want is not available, please apply early and select a room during your assigned reservation time.

Before logging in to Housing U, please view the 2008-2009 Housing Application Timeline and Floor Designations (PDF) for specific dates and floor designations. Find out when you will be able to reserve and what areas you are eligible to live in. (Note: you must have 60 credit hours at the University of Utah to live in the upper division apartments. AP or CLEP credits do not count towards these hours.)

This PDF also highlights special living learning floors that are available. All living learning floors require an additional interest application.

The Application Process

Access Housing U, as described above. Click on "Application" on the top menu bar. Select the appropriate application (example, "2008 - Academic Year" for the 2008-09 school year). For all remaining tasks necessary to complete the online housing application and reservation, please refer to the "Application Menu" on the left side of the application page.

After completing Step 3 (payment of the $25.00, non-refundable application fee), complete your profile in Housing U under Profile > Preferences before proceeding with the rest of the Items in the "Application Menu."  This short questionnaire can be used to help in choosing a roommate.

Frequently Asked Application Questions

How much will it cost?

Housing fees are billed in July for the Fall semester. Items dated in August are due move in day - August 21 for first-time resdients and August 22 for returning residents.  Payments are due the first of each month with late fees ($20.00) assessed on the 8th of each month. You may pay monthly or for the whole semester. Students living in Gateway Heigts, Chapel Glen, Sage Point or Officers Circle see 2008-2009 Residence Hall and Dining Plan Rates + Dates (PDF) for semester costs for rooms and meal plans; students living in Benchmark Plaza, please refer to 2008-2009 Apartment Rates + Dates (PDF).

How do I know when my room reservation time is?

Applicants will be notified by e-mail about a week before their reservation time. Be aware that the University of Utah sends all correspondence to the students assigned UMail account.  HRE (Housing & Residential Education) will also use students' UMail e-mail to provide all information in the application process.  Information on how to activate this account can be found on the Campus Information System (CIS)and through the Office of Information Technology

Until May 14th, Housing & Residential Education will send correspondence to the e-mail you have listed in the Campus Information System (CIS).  Housing U utilizes needed information from your admissions application and your e-mail is part of that information.

How do I know my reservation is complete?

After choosing a room in step 5, you will need to complete step 7 (choose a meal plan) and step 8 (pay the refundable $75.00 security deposit).  You will need to complete these steps within 72 hours of choosing your room or your reservation will be lost.

Please note that no room changes will be made in the first two weeks or the last two weeks of the semester; carefully select your room.

What about a meal plan?

Students living in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan.  There are no facilities in the residence halls for students to cook meals on a regular basis.   We want you to be healthy!  Meal plans and prices are explained in the 2008-2009 Residence Hall and Dining Plan Rates + Dates (PDF). Meal plans are optional to juniors and seniors living in the Benchmark apartments as well as graduate students living in either Benchmark Plaza or Shoreline Ridge.

Students may change their meal plan once each semester. Meal plan changes can only be made during the first week of the semester.

How do I find a roommate?

Make sure your profile is complete in Housing U under Profile > Preferences.  When you use the automatic roommate search, your profile answers will be compared to other applicants’ profiles and a list of top matches will be generated.  You will be able to contact potential roommates through Housing U.  You can reveal your true email when you wish.  Or, you can request a specific person to be your roommate.  Remember, only students who have applied for housing can be requested as roommates.

You will be able to search for a roommate beginning March 7, 2008.  You can request any number of roommates and have multiple confirmed roommates.  But, you really aren’t roommates until you’ve both reserved a room.

Roommates can be placed once your reservation time begins.  After both parties have confirmed they wish to room together, the student with the earlier reservation time can choose a room and pull the confirmed roommate into that room/suite.  In step 4 of the application, you can accept or delete any roommate requests.  Once you have accepted a roommate, you can assign them to a space in step 6.  Both students have 72 hours to finish their portion of the reservation.  If this is not completed with the 72 hour time line, the reservation will be lost.

What if I don’t choose a roommate?

Choosing your roommate is optional.  You can reserve the space you are interested in without going through the roommate process. At any time you can view the profile of other students reserved in your room/suite.  If you decide to change rooms, you will need to cancel the room reservation you have and make another one.

What if I need to cancel?

You can cancel your reservation online until July 1, 2008.

After that time if you no longer wish to live on campus, you will need to pay the $400.00 contract cancellation fee.  Notify Housing at info@housing.utah.edu to have your reservation cancelled.

If you will not be attending the University of Utah, you may cancel after the cancellation deadline by notifying Housing at info@housing.utah.edu.  After we have confirmed you are not registered for class, your room reservation will be canceled.
