AREC Position Description

The Assistant Residential Education Coordinator (AREC) position is a graduate assistant, live-in, staff position within Housing & Residential Education and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah. The AREC assists the Residential Education Coordinator in providing leadership and coordination of a comprehensive student-focused program for a residential community of five to nine buildings housing 700 to 800 students. The AREC has direct supervision of a staff consisting of 8–10 Resident Advisors.

The AREC is also responsible for coordinating and providing leadership with system-wide collateral processes, to include Student Leader selection, training, assessment, inservices, advising student groups (RHA & NRHH), diversity initiatives, liaison with other Student Affairs offices, etc.

The AREC position is part of the crisis response team and serves on duty for the housing system. The position is a 12-month position and reports to the Residential Education Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as primary supervisor to the Resident Advisor staff, including weekly meetings, tracking fulfillment of expectations, development of a positive working relationship, assist RAs in their skill and professional development.
Assist the Residential Education Coordinator in supervising day-to-day operation of the residence hall, including staff selection, training and evaluation, organization, planning, student conduct, programming, counseling, and supervision of office assistant.
1. Collaborate with Living/Learning partners. Supervise and evaluate developmental living-learning programs for residents and student leaders. Programs may include First-Year Focus & LEAP, Leadership in Service, Outdoor Leadership, Go Global, Engineering, and Honors.
2. Implement and support University and Department policies and assure proper interpretation of policy to staff and residents.
3. Coordinate and assist with Departmental administrative processes and collateral projects such as advising, inservices, marketing, training, selection, opening/closing, diversity initiatives, etc.
4. Actively support the development of student leadership and student governance by assisting in advising training, leadership development activities, and program coordination.
5. Develop and maintain good communication between and among staff and residents promoting positive public relations. (This includes central office, custodial and maintenance staffs.)
6. Develop a community and educational environment which encourage growth opportunities and positive relationships among residents.
7. Assist in the coordination of residents' room assignments to and within the residence halls system.
8. Work closely with the Residential Education Team, Housing & Residential Education, and Student Affairs Division.
Availability
1. The AREC is a part time, live-in staff member.
2. The AREC will maintain regular office hours. Included will be a minimum of ten hours a week as time periods convenient for residents and hall staff to make contact and/or appointments with the AREC.
3. The AREC is required to be present in close proximity of the Heritage Commons complex during specified evenings related to duty responsibilities.
4. The AREC will be required to be available during a portion of break periods to assist with closing procedures or duty responsibilities.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in student personnel, a related field, or equivalency required.
Must be currently enrolled in a University of Utah Master's or Ph.D. level program. A course of study related to the position's responsibilities preferred, Educational Leadership and Policy.
Must have at least one-year previous experience in student housing management, and programming, student activities, or related fields.
Must have experience relating to, recognizing, and assisting individuals with their concerns.
Must be competent in management, training skills, programming, and communication.
Prefer that candidates have prior supervisory experience.

Compensation

A furnished one-bedroom apartment which includes all utilities, internet, and local phone, and cable television.
Annual salary of $13,450/12 month (a 10 month position is possible), furnished or unfurnished apartment, local phone, cable and Ethernet connection; meal plan; cell phone compensation, and professional development opportunities.
Full tuition waiver for students in the Educational Leadership and Policy program.
For students not in the Educational Leadership and Policy program, Housing & Residential Education will pay 75% of out-of-state tuition for 18 credits for the fiscal year and 100% of tuition costs for 18 credits of in-state tuition. (Please review admissions material regarding residency status.)

The terms of the AREC’s employment are governed by his/her contract with HRE and not by the University’s Policy and Procedures Manual. The position may be renegotiated for a second year at the sole discretion of Housing & Residential Education. The AREC may also be considered for Summer employment at the sole discretion of Housing & Residential Education. The AREC serves at the will of Housing & Residential Education and may be terminated from the position at any time, with or without cause. The AREC shall have no right to grieve a termination.
