Coordinator of Leadership Development, Selection, Training Position Description

General Purpose

This is a twelve-month, live-out (live-on option) appointed staff position reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Education. This position participates as a member of the Residential Education team; serves as the primary advisor to the Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary; creates student leadership development initiatives, coordinates selection and training processes, and crisis management and assistance as required. Evening and weekend commitments should be expected.

Primary Responsibilities

RHA & NRHH Advising

  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).
    • Assist with the coordination and implementation of all RHA related programs
    • Challenge student leaders to reach out to the residence hall students
    • Travel with all IACURH & NACURH related conference delegations
    • Co-coordinate RHA fundraising programs involving On Campus Marketing
    • Hold one-on-one meetings with the executive members of RHA and NRHH
    • Plan and implement RHA & NRHH executive board retreats
    • Attend all RHA and NRHH Executive Board and General Body meetings
    • Provide consultation related to all financial matters of the organizations
    • Assist with the selection, recruitment and induction of new NRHH members
    • Provide on-going, constructive feedback to elected student leaders and help them hold each other accountable for their work.
  • Work to establish a closer working relationship between RHA and NRHH
  • Help coordinate and then attend the Floor Representative leadership day in September
  • Provide thorough training for Residential Education staff related to advising and leadership development during Residential Education training
  • Present on-going leadership development presentations for advisors at Residential Education staff meetings
  • Serve as a resource to Area Council advisors across campus and provide them with the necessary tools to hold successful elections, events, etc.

Department Training & Selection

  • Coordinate the departmental training program: working with the leadership team to identify training topics and their sequence. Implement training for all HRE staff with at least one training session per month.
  • Implement skill building, time management, goal setting and transition workshops for residence hall leaders.
  • Establish innovative departmental leadership initiatives for student leaders and staff.
  • Co-Coordinate and implement the annual Fall Student Leader Training program with the Residential Education staff.
  • Assist in the coordination of in-service training sessions for Student Leader Staff in the area of diversity and social justice work.
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of the Residential Education summer training.
  • Provide coordination to the Student Leader, REC, and AREC selection processes.

Living Learning & Leadership Liaison

  • Liaison with the Orientation and Leadership Development office regarding classes, events, and initiatives
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to the Leadership in Service floor as well as to other Living Learning floors.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with other leadership staff across campus
  • Advocate for the needs of residence hall leaders to departmental and campus leadership

Assessment

  • Conduct research and benchmarking, evaluate and assess programs and services' effectiveness to understand the extent to which residential leadership programs are impacting student development, learning, engagement and success
  • Identify best practices and implement strategies (based on development theories and research) to assure full student participation and engagement in residential education.

Other Duties

  • Serve on departmental committees and represent Residential Education to university committees as assigned.
  • Assist the HRE team in completing assigned projects as necessary, especially at peak times of opening and closing.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of student organizations, student development theory and its applications in the residence halls.
  • Knowledge and understanding of diversity and an ability to work with a wide variety of people while recognizing the needs of ethnic, racial, religious and cultural minorities, international students, LGBT students, women and individuals with disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal communication, writing, public speaking and presenting, teaching and instruction.
  • Research skills, including interpreting research as it is reported in professional literature and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to conduct assessment and evaluation of residential education leadership initiatives, interpret and report data, compare data to benchmarking data and stay current with trends in leadership education.
  • Knowledge of student affairs field and specialized functions.
  • Knowledge of personnel management, including the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Knowledge and understanding of leadership styles and their applications in an organization.
  • Significant knowledge in budget development, management & supervision.
  • Knowledge of facilities management, including the day-to-day custodial and maintenance operations in residence halls.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, or a related field
  • Two years of full-time professional experience in housing, one year is required.
  • Must have demonstrated ability in advising, organizing and facilitating student development and understanding operational responsibilities within RHA and residence halls.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of assessment and evaluation in student affairs.

  • $36,000 annual salary
