STUDENTS—Is someone else paying your housing bill? Sign a FERPA waiver so Housing can speak with them about your account.

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) is a Federal regulation that states that The University of Utah may not release certain types of student information to anyone except that student without the student's express written consent.

STUDENTS: If you would like Housing & Residential Education (HRE) to discuss your financial information with your parents so they can pay toward your account balance, please come in to the HRE office to sign a FERPA waiver form. The form must be signed in person. If you do not want to sign the waiver but still want your parents to pay for your housing, you can simply access your account in Housing U and let your parents know how much is owed on your account.

PARENTS: If you are paying your student's bill, you may either:

  1. Ask your student how much they owe, or
  2. Ask them to stop by the HRE office to complete a FERPA waiver form. Once the form is completed, HRE staff will be able to share information with you, as long as your name is listed on your student's FERPA waiver.

NOTE: The FERPA waiver signed in the Housing & Residential Education office is specific to HRE. Any other waiver a student may have signed on campus is valid only in the department in which it was signed.
