Wireless Network Installation in All Housing Areas

Effective Summer 2008, the portion of your housing charge that previously paid for your room phone service will now be paying for wireless networking in the residence halls and apartments. Shoreline Ridge will also have wireless networking installed, but residents will maintain their apartment phone service as well.

Your current wired connection will also remain active for your use.

Installation has already begun. As each building is completed, its new wireless network will be activated. Our tentative activation schedule is as follows:

Building Activation Date

As of Summer 2008, personal wireless networks (access points) will not be allowed due to possible interference. Residents are encouraged to turn off all personal networks when the University provided network is enabled.

For more information or if you need assistance with connecting to the wireless network, please refer to wireless.utah.edu or contact the Campus Help Desk at (801) 581-4000.

Discontinuation of Room Phone Service (Chapel Glen, Gateway Heights, Officers Circle, Sage Point, and Benchmark Plaza)

In October 2007, we asked students the following questions in our annual survey:

  1. Which type of phone service do you primarily use?
  2. If you use your room phone, on average, how many times per week do you use the telephone in your room?

The results from the survey were that 90% of students use their cell phone as their primary phone. Only 8.5% use the telephone in their room.

We asked for additional consensus from the Residence Hall Association through Area Councils to weigh in on removing phone lines from student rooms. After speaking with students, RHA supported the removal of the phones and the installation of the wireless network.

Date this will take place: Room phone lines will be deactivated on Monday, May 12, 2008.

Public Phone Lines in Your Building

Residence Halls: There will be a phone line and handset in a lounge on each floor for your use. There will also be an active phone on the first floor hallway or alcove area.

Officers Circle: There will be a phone line and handset in a first floor lounge.

Please keep the handsets in their locations so that everyone is able to use the public phones.

All exterior entrance phones will remain active.
