Pre-Arrival Checklist
- If you live near Salt Lake City, try to have your student ID picture taken. Your ID card is your building access and your meal card. Having this ready to pick up will be one less thing to do when you arrive. If you attend on campus orientation, you will have your picture taken then. Your card will be ready for you at check-in.
- You may pay your August charges online after July 31.
- Review the Heritage Commons map to see where your building is located and where your check-in location is.
- There are several taxi/shuttle services from the airport to the University. Reservations are highly recommended for the shuttle service [Express Shuttle ($18 from the airport) http://www.expressshuttleutah.com/]. You can access cabs at the airport after you have your luggage.
Building Access & Room Access
Room key: You will be issued your room key at check-in. It is vital that you lock your doors at all times. It is also important that you talk with your suitemates about locking their door. In Chapel Glen and Gateway Heights, the rooms are connected by the bathroom. Bathrooms do not have locks on them as this would violate fire code.
If you are locked out of your room during business hours - please go to HRE to sign out a lock-out key. After business hours, please call 587-2000 (PHC desk) and the duty RA will be radioed to assist you. If you obtain a lock-out key from HRE during business hours, the first one will be free and each additional one will be $5. If you need your door unlocked after regular HRE business hours, the cost will be $25.
If you are locked out of your building and need a temporary access card, you can purchase one from HRE during business hours or from the PHC desk after HRE business hours. A temporary access card costs $10. If you return the card to HRE during business hours, you will receive a $5 refund to your account.
If you have lost your key and need a lock change, the cost will be $60.00.
If you are locked out of your building or room after the Peterson Heritage Center closes, please call 587-2000. This number is answered 24 hours per day. The duty RA will be radioed to let you into your room. This service costs $25.
Staff will always verify your identity when letting you into your room or issuing a lock out key. Billing for all fees will be to your Housing U account.

Wondering What to Bring with You?
Check out the “Quick Glance” guides for residents and parents for a listing of items you should bring along with other valuable information.
A couple of highlights:
- The U is a dry campus—please do not bring alcohol or empty alcohol containers.
- Toilet paper (all bathrooms are semi-private bathrooms). Not all buildings have public restrooms.
- A shower caddy for your shower supplies (Housing & Residential Education has removed the shower shelves from the showers as they frequently fell down, causing a safety hazard).

Insurance
Housing & Residential Education assumes no liability for thefts in the residence halls or apartments. We recommend that residents obtain renter's insurance to cover their personal belongings. One such provider of insurance (although not endorsed by Housing & Residential Education or the University of Utah) is NSSI (http://www.nssi.com).
Parking
No parking tickets will be given from Thursday, August 21 through Sunday, August 24, but you MUST be parked in a legal non-metered parking spot. Parking on the sidewalks, lawn, or in a handicapped space (without the appropriate tag) will result in a ticket. You can park in the metered locations, but you will need to pay the appropriate meter amount.
Canceling Your Room
If your plans have changed and you will not be attending the University of Utah or no longer plan to live on campus, please cancel your room reservation to avoid being billed. Log into Housing U and choose “Cancel Room Reservation” under step 5. The last day to cancel is July 1, 2008. After that date, the room cancellation fee of $400.00 will apply, plus daily housing and meal plan charges if you cancel after Move-In day.
