House Environment
Each year eleven undergraduate students from the College of Humanities are selected to live in the O.C. Tanner Humanities House, in historic Fort Douglas. Originally built in the 1870s as officer's quarters, the O.C. Tanner Humanities House has been renovated to create a unique living and learning community for students. This is an opportunity for undergraduate students from throughout the College to live together in an environment with an interdisciplinary focus. Living in the Tanner Humanities House provides a great balance between fun and learning. Since all members are Humanities students, studying is taken seriously and residents encourage each others’ success. But Humanities students know how to have fun as well. It’s easy to organize a study-break for a snack, movie, coffee run, or whatever. "Hallway parties" are frequent, with residents gathering in the hallways or common rooms to chat with each other. The house is a great environment because it lets you get to know other academically strong students who can become lifelong friends. We learn from each other, study with each other, and laugh with each other.
612 Resident Quote
"Living in the Humanities House is like taking an extracurricular class in life. You are housed among 11 of the best and brightest individuals this campus has to offer and one can't help but walk away with lasting experiences. I disagree with the title of the house though... It is more than a house, ultimately it is a home for it's residents." — Clayton NorlenDeans/Professors/Staff Who Have Attended House Programs This Year
