Fall 2021 Updates

Welcome home! We're excited that you'll be living on campus with us for the 2021-2022 academic year. See below to learn more about how Housing & Residential Education is addressing and planning for impacts of the coronavirus this fall. This webpage will be updated throughout the summer.

Resident Addendum

The number of University of Utah community members who have been fully vaccinated continues to grow.  Utilizing the CDC guidance for persons who are vaccinated, the university has made some shifts in expectations for the fall semester.

  • Based on a student’s vaccination status, they are asked to be responsible for their actions in complying with the CDC guidelines.
  • As with all things related to COVID-19, as the situation changes, so too will the guidance and expectations.
  • We will continue to provide updates throughout the fall semester.
  • Face Coverings
    • Face coverings are not required on campus in compliance with Utah law. That said, mask-wearing continues to be an effective means of preventing infection for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
  • Vaccinations
    • Getting the vaccine not only benefits yourself but the health of the greater community. You are strongly encouraged to get the vaccine, particularly as we work to offer more in-person classes in the fall.
    • Students who are not vaccinated and become exposed to a person who tests positive for COVID-19 will be required to quarantine at the University Guest House or off-site
    • The University of Utah is currently providing vaccinations at Student Health and through a weekly clinic on campus. Learn more about Utah vaccine distribution below.

Vaccine Information

  • Testing
    • Students will be required to be tested at move-in, regardless of vaccination status.
    • Asymptomatic testing will be available to students who are living on campus. HRE residents will be strongly encouraged to be tested regularly.
    • Symptomatic testing will be accessible through University of Utah Health for students who develop symptoms of COVID-19 or who are exposed to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.

COVID-19 Testing

  • Classes
    • Classes began on August 23, 2021.
    • Currently, the majority of fall courses are in an in-person format.

  • Housing Occupancy
    • HRE residence halls and apartments are at standard occupancy for the academic year.
    • Non-vaccinated students who need to quarantine will do so at the University Guest House or off-site.
    • Students who become positive for COVID-19 will isolate at the University Guest House or off-site.
  • Isolation and Quarantine Space
    • HRE will continue to hold spaces available in the on-campus hotel, the University Guest House, for students who need to isolate or quarantine.
    • Non-vaccinated students who are exposed to a person who tests positive for COVID-19 will need to quarantine at the University Guest House or off-site.
    • Vaccinated students who are exposed to a person who tests positive for COVID-19 will not be required to quarantine, but they will be asked to actively monitor their symptoms and report if COVID-19 symptoms develop using the U of U Self-Report Form.

More Information

  • Guests in the Residence Halls
    • For fall 2021 semester, HRE expects to allow residents to have guests in the residence halls. In the fall 2019 semester, a new guest policy was developed. This included the following:
      • a. requirement of residents to register guests,
      • b. limited the number of overnight guests per semester, and
      • c. integrated an auto-email to others in the living area that there would be an overnight guest with instruction on what to do if they did not approve of the overnight guest.
    • This policy will return and be in place for the fall 2021 semester.

Guest Policy

  • Community Engagement
    • We know that a core reason to live on campus is the opportunity to connect with others. At this time, we are planning for fall events and gatherings to be focused on smaller groups (50 people or less) and events that will take place outside.
  • Dining
    • Dining Services will follow state health guidance in regards to dining on campus. If cases continue to decrease, seating will return to the dining rooms and outdoor seating areas.
    • To-Go boxes and in-person seating will be available.
    • BOOST, the online preordering app for pick-up and delivery will continue to be in place.

Dining Information

  • Move-in Week
    • Students were assigned a day and time to move in for the fall semester based on their housing location. This schedule is posted on our Fall Moving In webpage.
    • Move-in Week for fall spanned over August 17-19, 2021.

Move-In Information

  • International Student Travel Expectations
    • Students traveling to campus from abroad will be required to follow CDC guidance. Please note that guidance varies for students who are vaccinated, and HRE strongly encourages all students who are able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to do so.
