FAQs
ACADEMIC YEAR 2026-2027
Applying for Housing - First-Year
1. Reservation times are based on when a student applies. Those who applied by May 4 are guaranteed a housing offer.
2. Students who complete the 2026–2027 first year housing application after May 4th will be included in room selection starting June 3 at 10 a.m. MT.
3. You do not need to log-in ahead of time and accept your LLC offer. If you get an offer for an LLC, you will "accept" this offer by reserving a room during your reservation time in that community.
4. Students can view potential roommates by viewing roommate profiles in Housing U. They can reserve together based on availability during their reservation time. There is no longer a roommate group tool to use. For the best chance of rooming together, applying early.
The University of Utah system updates automatically every day. If you just paid your enrollment deposit, you need to allow the system 24-48 hours to recognize the operation.
Unfortunately, because we give students more agency over the building and room type they live in, we cannot guarantee that you will live with your friends. When it is your turn to book your room, you will see all the rooms that are available, as well as the profiles of any other students who have booked those rooms. You will also see your compatibility with those students based on the questionnaire that you filled out in your application. If you have specific people you would like to live with, we recommend utilizing the Pre-Occupancy Room Change Tool or doing a Room Swap to get into a room together.
Yes, you can make changes to your application. Your “complete application” date will still be based on when you first submitted your application and paid the deposit, not when changes are made afterward.
Please try again later. What you see in the Housing U portal is what we have currently available. Be aware that we are in a dynamic environment and room changes are not guaranteed.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, our first-year traditional
housing options are: - Chapel Glen - Gateway Heights - Sage Point - Kahlert - Trailhead
Beginning on June 3rd at 10am, all First year students with a complete housing application will be able to participate in room selection and select an available bed on campus.
Upper Division Students
The 2026-2027 upper division housing application is currently open. Fill out an application TODAY in Housing U in CIS, if you’re interested in living on campus with Housing & Dining Programs during the next academic year.
- Applications are prioritized based on submission date. Room reservation time slots will be assigned based on the date and time you submitted the housing application.
- No application fee. As a current resident, you've already paid the one-time application fee. It's free for you to complete a housing application!
1. Reservation times are based on when a student applies, so apply early! The earlier you apply the better chance of getting housing you have.
Remember, upper-division housing is not guaranteed.
2. You do not need to log-in ahead of time and accept your LLC offer. If you get an offer for an LLC, you will "accept" this offer by reserving a room during your reservation time in that community.
3. Students can view potential roommates by viewing roommate profiles in Housing U. They can reserve together based on availability during
their reservation time. There is no longer a roommate group tool to use. For the best chance of rooming together, apply early!
4. There will be no upper-division waitlist. Instead, students can check for live housing availability in Housing U after the initial reservation period.
Honors students are not required to live on-campus, but they are able to apply to live in unique communities: If you are an upper-division honors student, you can choose to live in any upper-division housing option. You are not required to live in honors housing. You can, however, indicate interest in the Marriott Honors Community or Officers Circle Honors Houses (upper-division honors housing) when you apply.

Living Learning Communities
LLCs are selected in the first part of the housing application, before you participate in room selection.
Yes, you can update your LLC preferences at any time before selecting a room. Once you choose a room within an LLC, you are committed to that LLC and can no longer change your preference.
NOTE: students select preferred LLC's, not general buildings
If the LLCs you applied for are still available when it is your turn to reserve, you will have the opportunity to book there. However, this depends on availability, and we cannot predict how quickly they will fill up.
Decide on which LLC you prefer and reserve a room during your reservation time. After you reserve in an LLC, you may change rooms within that LLC, but you will not be able to change to a different LLC.
Room & Roommates
All students reserve their own room during their assigned reservation time. If you would like to live with a specific roommate, each student must reserve a bed in the same available room. We strongly encourage applying early to increase the likelihood of securing a space together.
After completing a reservation, students will have immediate access to the room change tool, which allows them to modify their room assignment if needed. Please note that roommate preferences and room selections are not guaranteed and are subject to availability.
You can view photos and 3D floor plans on our website by selecting the community you’ll be living in. You can also check out our virtual tours on our YouTube or our Housing Tours webpage.
Students can view potential roommate profiles in Housing U via CIS. Students can also use NearPeer or make friends and find prospective roommates through social media platforms. Please note that starting in 2025-2026 students will no longer need to create roommate groups. Students who wish to room together can reserve a room together based on availability during their reservation time.
Please note that you will only be able to room with folks who also selected the same housing selection as you for "male" "female" or "gender inclusive" housing.
We encourage students to communicate with each other and book in the same room together. Students can book together based on availability.
We ask these questions to create a student profile that is visible to other students. This way, when students go to reserve a space, you may view the profile of other students that are already booked in that room and work to find a good match.
You can view your roommate(s) or suitemate(s) by logging back into the Housing U Portal in CIS. Click “Apply for Housing” and select the 2026-2027 academic year application. From here, you’ll be automatically directed to the “Application Review” section where you’ll be able to view your roommates’ names, answers to profile questions, and the ability to send them a message to their UMail.
If your roommate has a privacy setting on that does not allow you to view their information, please contact the HDP office for assistance in reaching out to them.
Each semester, room changes are not allowed for the term's first two weeks. This process accommodates late arrivals, cancellations after classes start, and enrollment verification. Be aware that room changes are not available during the summer. After meeting with your RD, the Room Change Request Form is available on the Housing U portal.
Room changes are prioritized when students feel unsafe in their current setting. Requests for preference changes are processed lower on the priority list, and the resident must meet with their Residential Director (RD) before submitting the room change form in Housing U portal.
Dining
Dining plans are selected later in the housing process, after participating in room selection. You will be prompted to choose a plan before finalizing your housing information.
You can change your dining plan in the Housing U Portal in CIS by following these steps.

Moving In
Check your room's move-in time and date on housing.utah.edu/move-in/fall/.
The move-in process will occur over multiple days, from August 18-21, 2026.
Move-In days and times are appointed based on your residence hall and floor. This is the time that you should plan to arrive on campus. For the most up-to-date information about moving in, visit our helpful Moving In webpage.
Residents arriving on or after their move-in time should check in at their area's front desk instead of checking in at the Union Building. HDP will send other important move-in related information to you throughout the summer, including flow maps, parking information, and other logistics.
Please review our housing guide for more information on what items are included in your room. This guide is located on our Moving In page. We recommend reviewing this guide and checking in with your roommate(s) or suitemate(s) to determine if larger items, like minifridges and TVs, need to be brought to campus.
We offer a one-time early arrival fee of $250.
This single fee will allow students to arrive at any point beginning Friday, August 14, through Monday, August 17. To be eligible for early arrival, students must be in preapproved, registered groups participating in university sponsored activities or requirements. There is no dining plan service during this period.
Students participating in Sorority Recruitment Move-In will pay a $150 early arrival fee and receive arrival information as part of the recruitment process.
Note: Not all areas are eligible for early move-in.
Note: Students participating in early arrival as part of a university-affiliated organization or group will be administratively registered by the HDP Office in July. Please contact your group coordinator/coach if you have any questions about your arrival window.
Please contact HDP at 801-587-2002 or info@housing.utah.edu for more information.
Please visit the U Card website for instructions on setting up your mobile UCard.
Logistics & Services
All students who live on campus will be issued a mailing address. You will receive this address via email one week before you will be able to begin shipping items to campus. This email will also contain instructions on paper mail pick-up and our package locker system. For more information, visit Desk & Mail Services.
Residents are strongly encouraged to not bring a vehicle with them to campus. As a U of U student, you’ll have free access to campus shuttles to make your way around campus, and the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) public transportation system for trips off campus via bus, light rail (TRAX), and commuter rail (FrontRunner). UTA routes serve students from campus to downtown Salt Lake City, the SLC airport, ski resorts, and north and south along the Wasatch Front mountain region.
Students who bring a car to campus will need to purchase a virtual parking permit through Commuter Services.
Housing & Dining plan charges are included on your tuition bill and can be paid through the Office of the Bursar. All payments and payment plans are arranged through the Office of the Bursar. Specific housing and dining plan rates can be found on our Rates & Your Housing Account webpage.
