The Residential Education Student Leader selection process includes Resident Advisors (RA), Community Advisors (CA), and Social Justice Advocates (SJA). Below are brief descriptions of these student leader roles.

- Resident Advisors (RAs) serve on each floor to facilitate a cooperative, considerate group living environment and to promote learning in the floor/house/building community.
- Community Advisors (CAs) support our safety elements and responses on campus to promote a safe environment for our residents.
- Social Justice Advocates (SJAs) are a team of students committed to educating students on social justice topics.

Mandatory Information Sessions
All candidates in the Residential Education Student Leader Selection process must attend one (1) information session. Info Sessions are a chance for you to learn more about the HRE Student Leader roles and ask questions. These sessions will be staffed by current HRE staff, ready to help you navigate your process. We have virtual and in-person options. Attendance will be taken at each session. Applications will only be considered if the applicant has attended an information session. See the “application timeline & info sessions” section below for a list of the session dates.
Hiring Process
We are looking for positive, friendly students to join our team! Whether you are passionate about the U, experienced in customer service, or have a background in marketing, we have a position for you. Our teams' positions are hourly and you do not need to live on-campus to apply. If you have questions, please direct them to the appropriate team.
Position Descriptions
Position Overview
The Community Advisor (CA) position is an approximately 20-hour per week, live-on, student leader position in Housing & Residential Education within the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Utah. CAs support the HRE priority of creating safe and inclusive communities. CAs support residents regardless of race, class, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, age, size, ability, and a variety of other aspects surrounding identity on campus.
Within a residential community, Community Advisors work as a team with fellow student leaders to provide crisis and on-call response to the residence hall communities. CAs are expected to assist with the overall residence hall safety and care of students and support the operational needs of the department primarily during the evenings and weekends when offices/university are closed. CAs will assist in the Residential Curriculum (ResX) and cross collaborate with Resident Advisors (RAs), Social Justice Advocates (SJAs), and the Residence Hall Association (RHA).
A Community Advisor is supervised by and reports directly to Residential Community Coordinators (RCC), Graduate Assistants (GA), and/or other HRE professional staff.
Responsibilities
Crisis and Care Response & Policies
- Serve on weekly/bi-weekly duty rotation in assigned residential Rounds require community advisors to move through and between multiple residence halls.
- Includes weekends and evenings throughout the school year, and break periods/University
- Community Advisors may be assigned to additional duty shifts in the event of crisis/emergency, campus events, etc.
- Respond to student concerns and crisis situations, when necessary, engage with HRE and campus resources to provide immediate and long-term support services, and work alongside Resident Advisors to manage crisis.
- Adhere to policies and procedures outlined in the Housing & Residential Education Resident Policies and Responsibilities, in addition to local, state, and federal laws.
- Learn and execute policy enforcement protocols to address and document policy violations, submit facilities work-requests, and implement emergency responses as outlined in the Emergency Procedures Manual.
- Foster a welcoming environment for all residents during assigned duty
- Remain in assigned coverage area as required by direct supervisor for duty
- A response radius for duty will be identified by HRE Professional Community Advisors will be required to stay within this radius while on duty.
- Serve as a referral agent for HRE and be able to assist residents to access the appropriate resources on-
- Understand and implement responsibilities as a Campus Security Authority and Mandatory Reporter.
- Work in collaboration with University of Utah Police Department, Mental Health First Responders, Department of Public Safety, and other campus and community resources.
Resident Community Support
- Assist supervisor with ongoing residential engagement and support related to residents’ academic, social, and intrapersonal well-being
- Foster a culture of belonging by assisting in community building and getting to know the students in the residential community.
- Align all strategies with a Residential Curriculum (ResX) to the three learning goals of Residential Education: personal development, community development, and inclusive excellence.
- Implement lesson plans assigned for the CA position using a variety of
- Execute assessment techniques including logging information and recording data from outreach and
- Engage students and staff while being inclusive of identities (race, ethnicity, age, socio-economic status, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, religion, country of origin, etc.).
- Maintain professional communication with residents, students, and professional staff including but not limited to Housing & Residential Education Administrative Services staff, Facilities staff and Custodial
- Support additional HRE strategies: Resident Advisors, Social Justice Advocates, and Residence Hall
- Promote and attend RHA opening events in
- Promote and support the overall efforts of the Educational Initiatives team including SJA event promotion, Equity Lounge/Living Room attendance, and RHA events and board membership.
- Role model appropriate positive behaviors- e., sleep, balancing academic and social life, class attendance, seeking care for mental health concerns, etc.
- Coordinate or represent the department on committees and examples may include but not limited to: recruitment activities, interviews, Student Leader Council.
- In partnership with the Office of Admissions, support new student recruitment by attending and working Red, White, and U Day (mid-April) and other assigned recruitment events.
Supervision
- As determined by the Residential Community Coordinator (RCC) supervisor, meet at least bi-weekly for a one-on-one meeting.
- Attend weekly staff meetings on Thursdays from 3:00pm-4:45pm, during the academic year, except during university closures or breaks. Time is subject to change based on review by HRE Professional Staff.
- Get supervisor approval for time off/nights away, so HRE Professional Staff are knowledgeable about student staff availability/presence in case of crisis/emergency.
- Follow the overnight guest policy as outlined by
- If guests are allowed, residents must register their guests in the Housing Portal and may have up to 10 guests per semester.
- Attend all scheduled trainings, including an intensive in-person training prior to fall semester from Monday, August 5, 2024 – Sunday, August 18, Move-in for Students Leaders will begin August 4, 2024. These dates are subject to change based on updates to the academic calendar from the Office of the Registrar.
Administrative Tasks
- Assist with Hall-Opening, Hall-Closing, Health & Safety Checks and other administrative
- During opening, this includes working assigned shifts from August 12-16, 2024, and January 2-4, 2025
- During closing, this includes completing assigned tasks from December 14-15, 2024, and May 3-4, 2025
- These dates are subject to change based on updates to the academic calendar from the Office of the
- Participate in the Student Leader Selection process for the 2024-2025 academic
- This will include helping to interview new candidates during the individual interview and group process interview which is tentatively scheduled for February 2025.
- Ethically use resident personal information, keys, building access, and uphold integrity with privacy practices for sensitive information.
- Complete necessary forms, and paperwork (i.e., duty logs), including all tasks required for spending of HRE
- Consistently check and promptly respond to Umail, Teams, and other forms of communication with supervisor(s) and other HRE team members within one business day.
- Other duties as assigned including but not limited to: attending Student Leader Council, writing Of-The-Month nominations, and promoting the annual Resident Satisfaction Survey, evaluating and logging learning assessment data concurrent with the Residential Curriculum (ResX), and attending departmental recognition events.
Additional Requirements
- Maintain full-time student status of at least 12 and no more than 18 undergraduate credit hours per semester, unless a credit hour exemption is requested and approved by For graduate level students, maintain at least 9 and no more than 12 credit hours.
- Serve for an academic year, from Sunday, August 4, 2024, to Sunday, May 4, 2025.

- Maintain a commitment to collegiate success, including Grade Point Average expectations:
- For all CAs maintain a 2.5 GPA (cumulative and semester).
- Student Leaders must remain free of any disciplinary sanctions imposed through the University conduct system in addition to local, state, and federal laws.
- Establish and maintain in good financial standing with Housing & Residential
- Limit other employment and extracurricular activities to 15 hours or less including travel time. If 10 or more of these hours are worked at the Peterson Heritage Center front desk, MHC front desk, or Lassonde front desk or mailroom, then you are allowed up to 20 hours of extracurricular All extracurricular activities and work commitments must be pre-approved through your supervisor(s).
- Community Advisors are not permitted to hold executive positions within the Residence Hall Association (RHA) or National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).
- The Community Advisor role will require duty rounds and travel to specific on campus locations for mandatory, in-person meetings/events. Transportation for these duties is not guaranteed. Any transportation and/or mobility aid(s) needed to consistently fulfill these duties is the responsibility of the Community Advisor to provide. All Community Advisors should be able to lift at least 15 For assistance with accommodations, please work with the University of Utah Center for Disability & Access.
Compensation
- Community Advisors receive credit via their Housing U account for the cost of their student leader room as assigned by HRE.
- Student Leaders are responsible for any fee associated with optional services requested. (i.e., Bed Lofts)
- Meal Plan 15
- Residence Hall Association dues which are integrated into the Student Leader Council funding
Additional Information
- Student Leaders are required to return to campus by 8am on Wednesday, January 2, 2025, to resume job responsibilities. All Student Leaders are able to return on Tuesday, January 1, 2025. These dates are subject to change based on changes to the academic calendar by the Office of the Registrar.
- Residential Areas remain open over university closures during the semester, including Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Spring CAs may be called to/assigned to serve on the duty rotation during these times and will be scheduled based on residential area.
- Only Lassonde Studios, Marriott Honors Community, Shoreline Ridge, Kahlert Village, and Benchmark Plaza are open during Winter Break including holidays.
- Break housing is not available to CAs serving in Chapel Glen, Gateway Heights, Sage Point, and Officers Circle communities.
- All Community Advisors are expected to cover break duty in some capacity (as assigned by supervisor or other HRE Professional Staff)
- I understand that higher education, and the University of Utah, may experience unforeseen circumstances. If unforeseen circumstances arise that prevent students from residing in on-campus facilities during the 2024-2025 academic year, HRE Student Leader roles may be impacted. Moreover, I understand that the effects of any unforeseen circumstances could result in Student Leader roles being furloughed or temporary task(s) changed based on staffing needs, and this also could include relocation of assigned placement.

Within a residential community, Resident Advisors work as a team with fellow student leaders to make residents feel at home on campus by assisting with the development of the area-wide community, Residential Curriculum (ResX), administrative responsibilities, emergency response procedures, planned learning outcomes, and cross-collaboration with Social Justice Advocates (SJAs), Community Advisors (CAs), and the Residence Hall Association (RHA).
A Resident Advisor is supervised by and reports directly to Resident Directors (RD), Graduate Assistants (GA), and/or other HRE professional staff.
Responsibilities
Community Development Strategies
- On an on-going basis, directly reach out to and build relationships with your assigned community members (number of community members may vary) to support their success within Housing and Residential
- Foster a culture of belonging by being present in their community (i.e., community hours), establishing community standards, managing roommate agreements, leading community meetings, posting important information, and confronting behavior that harms the community, etc.
- Host scheduled community hours each week in your assigned Parameters for the dates and times of your community hours will be set by your direct supervisor or other HRE professional staff.
- Acquire working knowledge of resident and university resources and refer residents to appropriate resources to support their success.
- Align all strategies with a Residential Curriculum (ResX) to the three learning goals of Residential Education: personal development, community development, and inclusive excellence.
- Implement pre-made lesson plans using a variety of strategies such as, but not limited to the following: community meetings and socials, planned individual conversations (“U-talks”), door decorations/bulletin boards, and promoting/attending/hosting HRE and campus events.
- Execute assessment techniques including logging information and recording data from outreach and
- Maintain positive communication with residents, students, and professional staff including Housing & Residential Education Administrative Services staff, Facilities staff, and Custodial staff.
- Engage students and staff while being inclusive of identities (race, ethnicity, age, socio-economic status, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, religion, country of origin, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions
All applicants must have completed two (2) full time semesters at the University of Utah by June 1, 2024.
Student Leaders do not get to directly choose their housing assignment. However, student leaders will be able to state their community preference throughout the application or interview process. Those preferences will be taken into consideration during selection/placement, along with many of factors.
Yes! All international students need an F1 visa to work on campus that grants the U.S. work authorization.
- Yes! We encourage students to apply for all roles that they are interested in. All three (3) of our student leader roles use the same application. Students will indicate in the application which roles they are applying for. However, applicants will only be offered one (1) role at the end of the process.
