Living on campus over the summer

The University of Utah sophomore student and Housing Ambassador Jillian Hoff shares her experience living on campus over the summer.

As summer housing applications and reservations are currently open, you may be wondering what it will be like to live on campus outside of the traditional academic year. Well, wonder no more and read our Housing Ambassador Jillian Hoff's personal experience living on campus over the summer.

I lived in Kahlert Village during the summer of 2022 and loved it! At first, I was nervous because I did not think many students would be around; most of my friends were leaving for the break, and I was moving out of the residence hall I had lived in all year. Little did I know it would be one of the most fun summers yet!

I chose to live on campus and stay in the state over the summer to get the Utah residency. I realized many students pursue residency for tuition purposes, and the U makes it super easy to get in-state tuition for out-of-state students. To my surprise, I ended up living with a lot of students with that same goal, and some of these people ended up becoming some of my best friends!

Living on campus over the summer gave me a new appreciation for the U. I learned to love the quieter campus as there were significantly fewer students than I had used to, but even with this big adjustment, I could explore our campus more and appreciate everything from pretty views to new study spots.

Although the campus is emptier over the summer, it is still lively! The Student Life Center stays open, so students lounge by the outdoor pool and take advantage of the facilities. Whenever I walked around, students were hammocking from the beautiful trees on campus or slacklining. Although we are most known for our winters, Utah during the summer is equally as great. The weather is warm, the sun is always out, and there is a ton of stuff to do outdoors, including hiking on the several hiking trails near campus, visiting parks and gardens, and getting to know the city.

There are so many benefits to living on campus during the summer. Meeting new people, short commutes to classes, residency, and much more! Explore your options and apply today!
